Pokémon: Detective Pikachu

Year: 2019
Running time: 104 minutes
Studio: Legendary Pictures
Directed by: Warner Bros. Pictures

SYNOPSIS
The story begins when ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City – a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world – they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

The hype for this movie for me was very high! I’ve always been a fan of Pokémon since when the first series and first videogames arrived in Italy and a movie with real actors has always been a dream for the aficionado of this franchise. The trailers also made this movie seem really good.
Luckily this is one of the few things that, even if I was extremely hyped about it, didn’t disappoint me… on the contrary!

Starting from the main plot and the general atmosphere of the movie, I liked this more mature version of Pokémon and it kinda reminded me of that fan-made manga called Viridian City, that showcased a noir version of this world.

The humor is really good, there are some scenes, like the Mr. Mime one, that left me laughing for a really long time. I found it really amazing how they could create a strong cohesion of the more intriguing and tense investigation part and the most hilarious skits.

The graphic direction is really amazing! You could re-watch various times a scene where they display Pokémon coexist with our modern world and you could always find a small detail that you missed the previous times.
The fights are also spectacular with some well done special effect. The final one is also really awesome and leads to a very great ending.

If I have to find a flaw of this movie it would be that Mewtwo sounds really overused as the “bad guy”, but generally this movie is so good that even the credits are beautiful!

  1. Detective Pikachu is such a fun movie! I loved how it had a lot of little details and in-jokes for fans, whilst still being accessible for viewers who aren’t familiar with the franchise. My sister-in-law has never played any of the pokemon games or seen the anime, but she still really enjoyed this movie.
