“Die for Lily”‘s update after Zendikar Rising

Is already a month that Zendikar Rising is out but it took me quite a few time to do this update because my Liliana deck got really lot of changes during the last month and I was waiting for the deck to be settled before writing this update.

At the moment I’m also building another control/combo deck for Commander and so I decided to change a bit my Liliana deck to not have redundancy between the playstyles. The new Liliana focused more on the Reanimator parts then on the Control one going for the win through value rather then disrupting our opponents’ plans.

You can find the previous post of this deck here

While by clicking here you can find the updated decklist.

Lets’ starts with the various changes.

+ Feed the Swarm, Demon’s Disciple, Merciless Executioner; – Pharika’s Libation, Mesmeric Fiend, Yarok’s Fenlurker
Before Zendikar Rising, Pharika’s Libation was one of the few method for black to interact with Enchantments and it was bit clunky… but know we have Feed the Swarm that is a much more efficient way to do the job.
Abusing of Mesmering Fiend and Yarok’s Fenlurker’s ETBs was nice but I prefer Demon’s Disciple and Merciless Executioner’s ability of hitting the board while also giving me the possibility to flip Liliana.

+ Chrome Mox, Mana Crypt, – Field of Ruin, Jet Medallion
The Mox and the Crypt were two awesome addition to my collection that they easily found a place in all my Commander decks. I decided to remove Jet Medallion because I found myself not using too much that discount as I play various colorless spell or lots of my black ones used only black mana sources to cast. Field of Ruin is another cards that I didn’t find myself using it much often… even when I switched to Strip Mine I rarely used it’s ability.

+ Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, Cabal Coffers, Cabal Stronghold; – Bojuka Bog, High Market, 2 Swamp
The real ramp of a mono black decks comes from its lands and so I decided to upgrade my mana base with some of the most powerful black lands. This really was a powerful upgrade to the whole deck, giving me tons of power in the late game.

+ Ashnod’s Altar, Nim Deathmantle, Wurmcoil Engine; – Bontu’s Monument, Culling the Weak, Oathsworn Vampire
Bontu’s Monument plus the Vampire was a nice combo that was game ending but was pretty similar to the Gravecrawler and the Phyrexian Altar’s one. I decided to add another type of combo which pieces could also do some work outside the combo. The three cards I added works together to generate an army of infinite wurm tokens… and you can also substitute the Wurmcoil Engine with a Grave Titan.

+ Open The Graves, – Bitterblossom
Both these cards are useful to get some more tokens on the battlefield. Open the Graves is less efficient in the production but the life loss from Bitterblossom could become dangerous if I had too many price to pay in life each turn.

+ Karn Liberated, Liliana of the Dark Realms, Liliana, Death’s Majesty, Liliana, Waker of the Dead; – Vampire Hexmage, Pitiless Plunderer, Grim Haruspex, Syphon Mind
Planeswalker are one of the best ways to generate value in Magic. Karn especially is one of the few way that black has to interact with non-creatures permanents. The cards that I removed are all the ones that didn’t perform really well in the previous iteration of the deck.

+ Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, – Carrion Feeder
Carrion Feeder was a nice sac outlet, but it only did that. Yawgmoth instead acts as removal, sac outlet, card draw and can also proliferate all our Planewalkers! A really awesome card!

+ Dance of the Dead, Necromancy; – Thoughtseize, Hymn to Tourach
This is the part where I cut the control elements for some more Reanimation. Hitting my opponents’ hand was really cool but reanimating my bigger creatures can give me much more utility.

+ Mindslicer, Razaketh, Vilis; – Phyrexian Obliterator, Sidisi, Undead Vizier, Phage the Untouchable
This is basically a change in reanimation target, Phage most of the time was there only as a pet cards and got stuck in my hand too many times. Mindslicer is a nice way to disrupt everybody hand putting all the table on “top-deck mode” while I can maybe abuse of cards like Necropotence to get ahead. Razaketh is the same as Sidisi but with the effect being reusable and Villis can really draw me tons of cards.

+ Syr Konrad, -1 Ob Nixilis, Unshackled
Syr Konrad as always been my pet card from Throne of Eldraine (I also built my first standard deck around him after playing him during my prerelease) but in this deck becomes a powerful win condition. He protects my boards and can also deal ton of damage if I have to discard some creature cards and then I reanimate them. Ob Nixilis was a nice stax piece on a stick but the black knight is really better.

+ Torment of Hailfire, Finale of Eternity, – Contamination, Painful Quandry
The two cards I removed were nice to tax or lock our opponents while the two added are way to abuse the tons of mana we are going to produce with Cabal Coffers or Liliana of the Dark Realms’s ultimate.

This new iteration of the deck is performing really well and so I’m really satisfied with it. Let me know if you decided to build the deck and what results you got with it.
