Hi everyone and welcome to the second week of the third Commander Boxing League of our group!
After the end of the previous week (click here to read how it went), each of us have chosen another set to get six additional booster packs from and added the cards we found inside them to our pool of cards.
What I saw during the first week was that I was able to cast Zurgo soon in the game I would have a great advantage on my Opponents, so I decided to open Gatecrash in hope to find some great mana rocks for my colors. Unfortunately I wasn’t really lucky in this but I still decided to keep Zurgo as my Commander.
We started playing, each of us trying to get two games to win this week and take three points home.
I keep and hand with a Sol Ring that would let me cast Zurgo at turn 3; I’m able to do that and I start by powerfully hitting Shadrix.
Shadrix casts Mangara and I attack him again. He decides to not block Zurgo and so now he is at 14 Commander Damages.
My opponents start building their boards and Shadrix enters the battlefield attacking me but it will still need many more attacks before eliminating me. Things change when Codie casts a Massacre Girl that cleans the board. This gives me the perfect chance to recast Zurgo and attack Shadrix with it, eliminating him via Commander Damage.
I’m alone against Codie and I’m able to strike him for 7 Commander Damage before he decides to attack me with everything he got. This leaves him completely open and I’m able to win the game by attacking with Zurgo and before damage casting Boros Charm.
I keep a slower hand than the one I had in the first game but I still have Mardu Banner that let me cast my Commander on turn 4. I’m able to do a single attack to Codie but then Shadrix decides to remove my Commander.
I’m not able to find the mana to recast it for a few turns and I don’t have anything else to cast so I get easily attacked by my opponents creatures that luckily are still small. One I’m able to recast Zurgo, Shadrix removes it again.
This makes me fall even more behind and I have to try getting back in the game thanks to my Warrior creatures and Raiders’ Spoils.
Shadrix tries to enter the battlefield but Codie counters it and I finally can cast Zurgo for the third time. I’m able to do an attack with it but then it gets removed by Shadrix… again.
Raiders’ Spoils continuously lover my life but let me find the lands to cast Zurgo for the fourth time… but unluckily I got too low on life and Shadrix knocks me out with an attack.
Codie removes Shadrix but then isn’t able to find any answer and Shadrix is able to win the game with the other creatures he has on the field.
I mulligan down to four because I’m not able to find lands. I have a really slow start and I’m also without red mana.
This goes one for many turns and so I’m not able to cast Zurgo at all. Shadrix casts Felidar Retreat but luckily I’m able to make him sacrifice it with Abzan Advantage before he starts making too much value out of it. After that I find myself in the worst position possible as my opponents are continuously filling their board while mine is still empty. Codie casts Magma Opus with the mana from his Commander and removes Shadrix and then finds Strategic Planning.
I still haven’t found the red mana and so, with my board empty, Shadrix decides to focus on me. Luckily his creatures are not too big and I’m able to stay in the game. Codie is building a nice board and maybe he is able to stop Shadrix from winning the League and so I turn my job in supporting him for this game.
I’m able to find the red mana… but it is a tap land and so before I’m even able to cast my Commander, Shadrix attacks me with everything and knocks me out. This however leaves him defenseless against Codie who wins the games by attacking Shadrix with all his creatures.
I keep my initial hand as I have all the colored mana I need but Shadrix has a really fast start and hits the field on turn 3. I cast Dragonscale General to pump my creatures but Shadrix drops a Luminarch Aspirant; with his Commander ability and the Aspirant he is able to pump Shadrix a lot and knock me out almost immediately from the game with Commander Damages.
Codie casts Kaya, Bane of the Dead and uses her to remove Shadrix but his opponent kills Kaya and recasts his Commander. This leaves only a few turns to Codie that doesn’t find answers and so gets quickly eliminated by Shadrix, made really big from its own and Luminarch’s abilities.
The last game really was a surprise! I couldn’t imagine Giovanni would have been able to dish out such a quick kill on both of us with his Commander!
By winning the week, Giovanni got 2 points in the ranking while Gianluca and I both got 1 for winning a game.
This is the ranking after the second week:
Giovanni: 3 points.
Raven: 3 points.
Gianluca: 2 points.
