Commander Boxing League 4 – Final Week

Hi everyone and welcome to the final week of the fourth Commander Boxing League of our group!

After the end of the previous week (click here to read how it went), each of us has chosen another set to get six additional booster packs from and added the cards we found inside them to our pool of cards.

After the previous week, I was last in the ranking with a possibility of winning the League only if I was able to win this week without giving my brother a single point… seeing this as a really hard things to do, I decided to use the last week as an occasion to try out a Commander that really interested me: Niv-Mizzet Reborn.
As my boosters I went for Guilds of Ravnica, looking for ways to fix mana and multicolored spells to grab with my new Commander.

I was able to find some rocks and lands in these packs that, combined with what I already had, made it possible for me to reliably play a 5-color deck.

You can click here to see the decklist.

While Giovanni kept his Olivia deck, Gianluca surprised us by bringing a Siona, Captain of the Pyleas deck to the table!

We started playing, each of us trying to get two games to win this week and take two points home.

GAME 1
I don’t have a super-fast start but I have good lands that let me get all the colors I need right from the start. Siona enters but isn’t able to find anything with its ability while I, when I cast Niv-Mizzet, I’m able to get three cards from it. Olivia also enters and I decide to attack her because it’s really dangerous without Linvala constantly blocking its ability. I start dominating the game and I try to protect my creatures with Shalai but Olivia removes it. Olivia then breaks a piece of Sione that in response destroys Olivia itself. I take the chance to tap out and play a March of Multitudes where X is equal to 9. I cast Storrev, hoping to be able to get Shalai back with it but Sione casts Light of Day, blocking him, Niv-Mizzet and lots of Olivia’s creatures.
I start chipping down Sione’s life with all my other creatures and I’m able to bring him down to 11. Light of Day gets removed and so I’m able to attack Sione again, bringing him even lower in life. Olivia removes my Commander but I’m able to quickly recast it and this time I get six cards from it.
I continuously attack my opponents bringing them really low on life while I’m at 70+ thanks to my lifelink creature. They aren’t able to stop me and I quickly close the game.

GAME 2
I nice initial ramp and Siona enters again and doesn’t find something with its ability. However Siona starts becoming bigger and producing Soldier tokens but I have six mana at turn 3 and so I’m able to cast Niv-Mizzet that finds me 3 cards. I cast Dovin, Hand of Control that helps me slow down my opponents and ensure me some kind of protection from Olivia.
I cast Shalai, giving protection to my creatures and powering them up with its ability. This put me immediately in Archenemy position, fed by me winning the first game. Olivia has a lot of life but I’m able to bring Siona really low; I’m purposely focusing on him because my possibilities of winning the league will become 0 if he wins a single game… and also because he brings Light of Day again on the table. My opponents try to stall me out, looking for answers. I find a removal to kill Siona’s blockers and I attack him and remove him from the game.
Olivia alone isn’t able to fight me and so decides to concede.

I totally didn’t expect Niv-Mizzet to do this well in the league. I should have probably built him sooner!

By winning the week, I got 2 points in the ranking while the others got 0.

This is the ranking after the fourth week:
Gianluca: 6 points.
Raven: 6 points.
Giovanni: 5 points.

With both me and my brother with the same amount of points, we decided to do a tie-breaking round to decide who will win this fourth Commander Boxing League.

Tie-breaking Round!
I keep a nice hand but a bit risky because I only have 2 lands. He starts with a Sol Ring and Siona. I take five damages to the face but I’m able to bounce it back to his hand. He re-casts it and finds Eldrazi Conscription.
I start playing defensively, waiting with mana for a counter to remove it when he tries to cast the Conscription. He still puts me on a clock and so I have to cast Niv-Mizzet to protect myself. He took the chance where I cast Niv to play the Conscription. I’m not able to find removals and so he wins the game.

With the Tie-Breaking round Gianluca was able to win the League! We will have a fifth Commander Boxing League with a surprise! So stay tuned!
