This could have been probably the best anime of 2021!

This is an anime about oneself, the trauma that happens to encounter in life and how to grow by facing them. The topics are not light at all as some of the themes are: suicide, bullying, self-harm, sexual abuse, gender, euthanasia… dealing also with cases where the victim feels that deserves this kind of abuses.

As you have read, the themes are quite weighty but they were still able to add action and fights without being disrespectful of the situations. An oneiric world where bullies and abusers get dehumanized into the monster that they really are and that pushes the victims to these extreme acts.

I would have never thought that an anime about psychology and oneself could also have such amazing fighting scenes and a story so intricate and compelling that we can see developing through the whole story and reaching the peak during the final episodes… or so I wish it would have gone. The final episodes deserve a bit of a talk (without any spoiler).

The anime ended with the 12th episode and then after a few months of waiting the 13th one came out. The ending of the 12th was truncated, leaving much to be told and so I was waiting so impatiently for the last episode to understand how things were going to really end.
The production also promised a double-length episode for the last one and so I was hoping to have a lot of action and explanations… but it wasn’t like that: the first half of the 13th episode was basically a recap of the whole story and so, in the end, the new parts were only a regular episode long.

The final episode was disappointing as it doesn’t close anything that was left open at the end of the 12th; instead we get a completely open ending… will there be a second season? I sincerely hope yes because, if there isn’t, they ended flushing down the drain an anime that for me was exceptional!

I started by saying this could have been the best anime of 2021… but due to the finale I don’t think it deserves this title.
Still I completely recommend you to watch it because all the rest is a masterpiece!

  1. We’re in the fall season and looking back at what came this year for anime, had the finale been like the rest of the show I’d certainly be a pick for the best of the year. Though apart from the ending everything is awesome, so major props for the creative team behind. With the amount of story it has to cover a second season, or even a movie would be certainly ideal.
