Commander Exercise 57 – Evelyn, the Covetous

Welcome back to Commander Exercise, the series where I build EDH decks for fun and to improve my deck building skills.

Streets of New Capenna is out and so it’s time to start playing around with some of the new Legendary creatures! One of those that caught my eye was Evelyn, the Covetous!

Evelyn let us create a Vampire Tribal deck with a control-ish side that will let us play with our opponents’ cards.

The deck has a major focus on the tribe but it also differs from the classic Vampire tribal for two things: first of all the Grixis color combination instead of a more common Mardu or Rakdos one; and second for how we can use Evelyn’s ability to play a more control game plan by getting advantage of the cards we are going to exile from the decks.

Evelyn herself can also be used to counter some of our opponents’ plays thanks to her Flash ability: someone uses a Vampiric Tutor? Let’s steal what he searched by flashing out our Commander!

The deck was built with a 250$ budget in mind and you can find the full decklist by clicking here.

Mostly mana rock but we also have Professional Face-Breaker and Scion of Opulence that will create Treasures for us when one of our creatures deals combat damage to a player or dies.

The main part of the deck with all our Vampires and the Lords to develop our tribal plan. Most of these are staple of Vampire decks but we also have some new cards and some others that rarely find a space in a vampire deck; one of these is Mirko Vosk: usually excluded due to the blue color not being a part of vampire decks, here he will help us out by milling our opponents by a lot of cards.

From the Exile
These are cards that will replicate our Commander’s ability of exiling cards and let us cast them or give us some benefits for casting them, like Prosper that will give us Treasures or Wild-Magic Sorcerer that will give them cascade.
Remember that Ashiok‘s -7 isn’t limited to the card you exiled with it, but will cast any card we exiled from our opponents!

Blinking our Vampires is another good way to exile more cards from the top of the libraries; many of our creatures also have some nice ETB effect that we can replicate thanks to the blink of our spells.

Card Advantage
Some staples card of these colors plus some Vampire that will also net us some Card Advantage, like Champion of Dusk.
Twilight Prophet is one of the best ways to draw cards as it will let us draw while also gaining us life and damaging our opponents! It will not be too hard to get the City Blessing.
Reflections of Littjara will double all our Vampires getting us even a better board presence plus also doubling Evelyn’s triggers.

Again more staples of the Grixis colors plus some other of the Vampire tribe, like Anowon that will remove a non-vampire each turn.
Olivia’s Wrath is a powerful mass removal that will potentially leave our board unscathed while annihilating our opponents’ ones; perfect to clean the board before our final assault.

Lands in this deck are mostly to get the colors we need to cast our spells but we also have some utility ones, like Bojuka Bog that could help us exile more cards from our opponents or stop their graveyard shenanigans.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Let me know how you would have built it differently, what you will have added and what not…
Also don’t forget to tell me what I should try to build next.
