Commander Exercise 61 – Magecraft is the way

Welcome back to Commander Exercise, the series where I build EDH decks for fun and to improve my deck building skills.

This time I got asked by mtg_toaster to build a deck with Extus, Oriq Overlord as Commander.

Extus is one of the double faced creatures of Strixhaven, having the front as a Legendary creature and the back as a Sorcery; in this deck we are going to focus more on the front, creating a control deck without blue that focuses on getting value from casting instant and sorcery.

Extus’s Magecraft lets us recover a nonlegendary creature from our graveyard making us net value from every spell we cast by giving us a creature back. Together with Extus we will have different other creatures that will net us an extra advantage when we cast our instant or sorcery.

The deck has a control gameplan where we focus on controlling the board while we net value with our creatures or by closing with one of our combos. We also run a Sunforger package to get even more ready with our answers.

The deck was built with a 250$ budget in mind and you can find the full decklist by clicking here.

Ramp
The ramp of the deck is composed mostly of mana rocks, but we also have some cards that works with our general theme of the deck.
Storm-Kiln Artist is the first of our magecrafter that could possibly produce us a ton of mana, while Solemn Simulacrum works well with our Commander’s ability that could give it back tons of time.
Primal Amulet will discount our Sorcery and Instant and then flip and duplicate the one we cast with it! Really powerful in some situations!

Magecrafter
These are our creatures that will lead us to victory while we are casting our instant or sorceries!
Some of them will do damage while others will create more tokens to swarm the board with tokens.

Card Advantage
The card advantage in this deck assumes many kinds of forms, like sheer card draw or recovering spells from our graveyard. We also have the Sunforger and a series of cards to tutor for it.
Dauthi Voidwalker becomes incredibly cool with Extus as we can use it to cast a card for free and then we get it back in hand thanks to our Commander’s magecraft, repeating the trick.

Interactions
Removals, Discard and Counters to keep our opponents’ boards in check. We are going to give more focus to spells that cost four or less that are either red or white so we can be able to tutor them with the Sunforger.
Plaguecrafter is a really nice creature that we can use to hit our opponents’ resources while always getting it back with Extus.
Chain of Smog is one of our combo pieces that will create a win condition with each of spells with Magecraft, by creating infinite tokens or draining infinite life. It will also create infinite Treasure with the back of our Storm-Kiln Artist that we can use with the back of our Commander to decimate our opponents board and create infinite tokens to win the game the next turn.

Other
Professor Onyx is a magecraft spell that will let us win the game with Chain of Smog plus supporting us with many different utilities.
Boros Charm will protect our board or let us deal the last damage to our opponent, while Deflecting Palm will punish the opponent that will try to mess with us by going too high.
Heat Shimmer and Twinflame are two cards that we can use mediocrely to copy one of our creatures… or cast it and copy it with our Dualcaster Mage! Creating another Dualcaster Mage that will copy it… Creating another Dualcaster Mage that will copy it… Creating…

Lands
By being a three colored deck, most of our lands are here to fix us and give us the right mana to cast our spells; we still run some utility lands to have some extra tricks up our sleeves.
Castle Ardenvale lets us go in the land-pass mode, focusing on dealing with our opponents and using the extra mana we might have to create some tokens to attack and defend ourself.
Eiganjo is a removal on a land, while Mistveil Plains works really well with Sunforger by letting us reuse the spells.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Let me know how you would have built it differently, what you will have added and what not…
Also don’t forget to tell me what I should try to build next.
