Valkyria Chronicles

Title: Valkyria Chronicles
Original Title: 戦場のヴァルキュリア
Episodes: 26
Year: 2009
Studio: A-1 Pictures

SYNOPSIS
In its expansion west to gain resources, the Europan Imperial Alliance invades the neutral Principality of Gallia, seeking to take control of its vast Ragnite deposits. Their strategic advantage, technological superiority, and military might make opposition nonexistent, so they steamroll through the border of the sleepy principality with ease.
As Imperial forces run through his quiet hometown, Welkin Gunther and his younger sister Isara jump into action, banding with the leader of the local militia to push the occupational forces out of the village. Quickly retreating to the Gallian capital, they are organized into a unit with the remnants of the militia, tasked with assisting in repelling the Imperial presence from the country.
Though unfamiliar with war, the newly formed Squad Seven must defend their country from annexation. But as the battle rages on through the streets of Gallia, ancient secrets will bring the team closer than they’d ever anticipated.

I thought I remembered a videogame with some similar initial plot and in fact this anime is based on one!

To be honest I was expecting various pitched battles and some guerillas but, apart from the beginning, these parts are almost completely absent until the final episodes, focusing more on the characters and their relationships.

The action scenes are really good while it’s a bit boring when they are not fighting. Many episodes felt a lot like filler one while others were really intense and beautiful.

It has some good drawings and important themes (like love, war, racism, the loss of loved ones…); it’s really able to move you and make you think. I had to put into my head the notion that this wasn’t an anime only on pitching battles before really appreciating it.
The battles, in fact, almost vanish in the central part of the anime to return later… with also the addition of a supernatural element in the form of the Valkyria.

The final battles are really awesome even if totally not what I was expecting when I first started watching it.
The first and last episodes were the best ones for me! If they kept that atmosphere the whole time, it would have been a masterpiece.
I cannot compare it with the videogames and say if it is good for the fans of the saga as I never played it; but I think it is a good anime for everyone.
